Movements through a fish ladder: temporal patterns and motivations to move upstream Neotropical Ichthyology
Agostinho,Carlos Sérgio; Pereira,Celiana Ribeiro; Oliveira,Rafael José de; Freitas,Iriene Siqueira; Marques,Elineide Eugênio.
Fish passages are constructed with the aim of reestablishing connectivity between critical habitats, in order to sustain those species that move over a large area during their lives. The upstream movements of most of the known migratory species are made for purposes of reproduction (adults) or dispersal (juveniles). The present study was conducted at the ladder constructed at Lajeado Dam (Luis Eduardo Magalhães Hydroelectric Power), on the Tocantins River. The objective was to assess whether there is a temporal pattern in the abundance of fish below the dam and in the ladder, that correlates with their breeding seasons. Additionally, it was examined whether reproduction is the predominant motivation of the shoals of fish that ascend the ladder. Samples...

Natural diet of Ocypode quadrata (Fabricius, 1787) (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura) from the Northern Coast of São Paulo, Brazil Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Gomes,Tassia Turini; Gheler-Costa,Carla; Rinaldi,Caroline Anacleto; Santana,William.
Abstract Decapod crustaceans have a wide variety of feeding habits, alternating among herbivory, predation, saprophagy, and filtration. The occupation of various trophic positions in the food web is a key feature in the evolution of the group. Thus, we analyzed the natural diet of the crab Ocypode quadrata (Fabricius, 1787), commonly known as the ghost crab and typically found on sandy beaches. The crabs were collected in the region of Ubatuba, between July 2016 and May 2017. The individuals were dissected in the laboratory, and each stomach was weighed and visually assessed in relation to the degree of repletion. After identification and classification, the items found were grouped for the analysis. In analyzing the stomach contents of Ocypode quadrata,...

Nesting biology of the trap-nesting Neotropical wasp Trypoxylo n(Trypargilum) aurifrons Shuckard (Hymenoptera, Crabronidae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Santoni,Mariana Marchi; Del Lama,Marco Antonio.
The present study was carried out in three localities of the state of São Paulo, Brazil: Araras (Dec/03-Dec/06), São Carlos (Nov/04-Nov/06) and Rifaina (Jul/04-Dec/06). Trap-nests were distributed among sites in the sampling areas and were collected every 35 days. Data from 295 nests indicate that T. aurifrons is a multivoltine species, with higher rates of nest building and cell production in the warm, rainy season. The trap-nests used by the females ranged from 117 to 467 mm in length and 3.1 to 16.6 mm in diameter. All nests showed deep plugs and a vestibular cell was found in 37% of the complete nests. The number of cells per nest ranged from one to 12. Females were larger than males, emerged from longer cells and their cocoons were significantly...

No mullet, no gain: cooperation between dolphins and cast net fishermen in southern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Santos,Mauricio L.; Lemos,Valéria M.; Vieira,João P..
ABSTRACT We report on the interaction between common bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus (Montagu, 1821) and cast net fishermen in southern coast of Brazil. The fishery was monitored in the mouth of the Tramandaí River Estuary to investigate the seasonality of catches and their relationships with a set of variables: presence/absence and number of bottlenose dolphins, fishing area, temperature, salinity, wind and water flow direction in the channel. The mullet, Mugil liza Valenciennes, 1836 is the target species and was the dominant fish in the catches (77% of total catch; 50% in frequency; 0.2 ind. x f-1). The use of GLM models helped to reveal that the number of the bottlenose dolphins, time of year (months) and spatial variation of fishing activity...

Note sur les temps de recherches journaliers maximum des senneurs intertropicaux. OceanDocs
Fonteneau, A..
This document present the maximum daily duration of searching time by the purse seiners in intertropical areas. The daily duration of daylight varies according the latitude and season, and searching for tuna schools can be conducted only during this time (e.g. between the times of sunrise and of sunset). This maximum daily searching time should be routinely used and should preferably replace the constant 13 or 12 hours of standard daily searching time presently used for French and Spanish purse seiners in the Indian and Atlantic Oceans.

On the use of open or closed traps in the capture of drosophilids Biota Neotropica
Penariol,Leiza; Bicudo,Hermione Elly Melara de Campos; Madi-Ravazzi,Lilian.
The use of open or closed traps in order to standardize the drosophilid collection is still a matter of discussion among researchers. In this paper, comparative data of drosophilid collections, using open and closed traps are presented. The collections were made monthly, during one year, in one fragment of a semidecidual forest located in the São Paulo State, Brazil. The efficiency of the traps was evaluated by the use of community descriptors: population abundance and richness and diversity of species. Closed traps were more efficient than the open ones in relation to the population abundance and the species richness, indicating their adequacy for standardization of drosophilid collection in studies of biodiversity and seasonality.

Option Pricing on Renewable Commodity Markets AgEcon
Jin, Na; Lence, Sergio H.; Hart, Chad E.; Hayes, Dermot J..
Options markets on agricultural commodities with maturities that exceed 13 months seldom trade. Our hypothesis is that this market failure is due to the absence of an accurate option pricing model for commodities where mean reversion can be expected. Standard option pricing models assume proportionality between price variance and time to maturity. This proportionality is not a valid assumption for commodities where supply response works to bring prices back to production costs. The model suggests that traditional option pricing models will overprice long-term options on these markets.

Orchid bee baits attracting bees of the genus Megalopta (Hymenoptera, Halictidae) in Bauru region, São Paulo, Brazil: abundance, seasonality, and the importance of odors for dim-light bees Rev. Bras. entomol.
Knoll,Fátima R. N.; Santos,Leandro M..
Nocturnal bees in the genus Megalopta Smith, 1853 are generally collected using artificial light sources. However, between 1993 and 2000, a total of 946 females (no males were captured) were captured using aromatic baits commonly used for orchid bees (Euglossini) in five localities in Bauru region, São Paulo, Brazil. Aromatic compounds used in bait traps were: benzyl acetate, eucalyptol, eugenol, skatole, methyl salicylate, and vanillin. The Megalopta species collected were: M. guimaraesi (71.2% of total number of specimens), M. amoena (28.1%), and M. aegis (0.6%). Using the data from these traps, we showed that there was a positive and significant correlation between the abundance of individuals and meteorological factors, rainfall and temperature. Bees...

Orchid bees (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Euglossini) are seasonal in Seasonal Semideciduous Forest fragments, southern Brazil Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Margatto,Cleiton; Berno,Vinicius Ortega; Gonçalves,Rodrigo Barbosa; Faria,Luiz Roberto Ribeiro.
Abstract Seasonal fluctuations in the abundance of orchid bees have already been reported. The variations in population dynamics may be expected to occur in more predictable and pronounced manners in environments with a clear distinction between rainy and dry seasons, where climatic variables are regarded to be good predictors of populational patterns. The main goal of this paper is to investigate the seasonality of males of orchid bees in fragments of Seasonal Semideciduous Forest in southern Brazil. Data comprise bait samples from five one-year periods on four forest fragments. The seasonality of species abundance was tested with circular statistics. Results suggest two phenological patterns, one for Eufriesea violacea (Blanchard), Eulaema nigrita...

Pampean lizard assemblage from subtropical Brazil: a temporal analysis Anais da ABC (AABC)
Winck,Gisele R.; Santos,Tiago G. Dos; Cechin,Sonia Z..
The increasing human occupation of natural environments is one of the greatest threats to biodiversity. To mitigate the negative anthropogenic effects, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of natural populations and the natural history of species. A study was conducted with an assemblage of lizards from a disturbed area of the Pampa biome, from February 2001 to January 2004. The assemblage showed a unimodal seasonal pattern, with the recruitment period occurring during the warmer months. The captures were seasonal for two of the three monitored years, and concentrated within warmer months. The minimum temperature explained the number of catches for the assemblage as a whole. However, when the species were analyzed individually, the temperature...

Phenological synchrony between the austral thrush Turdus falcklandii (Passeriformes: Turdidae) and its food resources within forests and prairies in southern Chile RChHN
Orellana,José I; Smith-Ramírez,Cecilia; Rau,Jaime R; Sade,Soraya; Gantz,Alberto; Valdivia,Carlos E.
BACKGROUND: Frugivorous birds are phenologically linked to the fruits that they eat. When there is less fruit in seasonal environments, frugivorous birds complement their diet by eating invertebrates. The depth of the phenological link between frugivorous birds and their dietary resources has not been studied until now. The objective was to determine the possible phenological synchrony between the Austral thrush (Turdus falcklandii) and its dietary resource, fruits and annelids, found in the fragmented forests in the South of Chile. RESULTS: The numbers of thrushes, annelids, and fruits in fragments of native forest and anthropogenic grassland in Chile's Lake District were estimated annually. Spatial variation (i.e., forest and grassland) and seasonal...

Population ecology of small rodents and marsupials in a semi-deciduous tropical forest of the southeast Pantanal, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Andreazzi,Cecilia S. de; Rademaker,Vitor; Gentile,Rosana; Herrera,Heitor M.; Jansen,Ana M.; D'Andrea,Paulo S..
The Pantanal is a South American biome characterized by extensive plains and stark environmental seasonality. Several habitats are subject to annual flooding, forcing small mammal species to aggregate in dry forest patches, which most likely influences their population dynamics and life history strategies. In order to investigate the seasonal influence on the life history traits of these small mammals, we conducted a 2-year mark-recapture study in the southeastern region of the Brazilian Pantanal (Nhecolândia) and analyzed the population dynamics of the most abundant small mammal species with the jackknife estimator. A trapping effort of 21,560 trap-nights resulted in 615 individuals in 1,171 captures (success = 5.43%). Three species of rodents - Oecomys...

POPULATION FLUCTUATION OF Empoasca sp. (HEMIPTERA: CICADELLIDAE) IN A PHYSIC NUT CROP IN MATO GROSSO DO SUL Acta biol.Colomb.
de CARVALHO,Denisar Paggioli; de OLIVEIRA,Harley Nonato.
Physic nut (Jatropha curcas L.) is an oilseed, semi-evergreen shrub or small tree of the Euphorbiaceae family, whose seeds contain oil that can be processed into a high quality biofuel. However, there have been reports of arthropods feeding from its leaves, including the green leafhopper Empoasca sp. (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae). The large numbers of this insect, observed in certain periods of the year in many regions of Brazil, are causing damage to the oilseed crops. This study aims at evaluating the fluctuation in green leafhopper population in a physic nut crop in Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul, to assess possible correlations with rainfall, maximum, average and minimum temperatures. This evaluation was conducted between March 2011 and July 2012. The...

Prevalence of diarrheogenic Escherichia coli and rotavirus among children from Botucatu, São Paulo State, Brazil BJMBR
Rodrigues,J.; Acosta,V.C.; Candeias,J.M.G.; Souza,L.O.; Filho,F.J.C..
In a one-year prospective study carried out to define the role of rotavirus and Escherichia coli in local childhood diarrhea, we determined the prevalence of both agents in 54 diarrheic children attending a health center in Botucatu. Diarrheogenic E. coli (DEC) strains were characterized by O:H serotyping, a search for virulence genetic markers, and assays of adherence to HEp-2 cells. Except for enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC), no other DEC category was detected in the children's stools. Both EAEC and rotavirus were isolated from 22 of the 54 (41.0%) diarrheic children as single agents or in combination with other enteropathogens. However, when considering the presence of a single agent, EAEC was dominant and isolated from 20.4% of the patients, whereas...

Pricing Plans for Managing Seasonal Deliveries by Dairy Cooperatives AgEcon
Ling, K. Charles.
This study develops a method to devise pricing plans for dairy cooperatives to recover costs of handling seasonal milk deliveries from producers and the cost of satisfying handlers' cyclical fluid demand. Based on analyses of hauling and manufacturing costs, charges against producers and handlers are formulated. Manufacturing cost is the major component of producer charges. Give-up charges against handlers are determined by the cooperative's manufacturing cost, while hauling cost is the main consideration in servicing handlers' day-to-day fluctuation of fluid demand.
